[Participated] Saemangeum International Airport Design Competition

Competition 222 Feb. 18, 2025

This proposal envisions Saemangeum International Airport as a replacement for the outdated Gunsan Airport, aiming to promote balanced development in Jeonbuk Province. Inspired by the blue sea, mudflats, and the Gogunsan Islands of Saemangeum, the concept "Blue Wings" was proposed. Despite its relatively small total floor area of 23,000㎡, it operates with two independent terminals for international and domestic flights. To achieve this, the design simplifies complex functions such as departure and arrival circulation and baggage handling while ensuring efficient operations. A modular system allows for easy expansion or reduction in response to fluctuating demand and project conditions. The design avoids large-scale spaces, instead opting for an appropriately scaled layout that incorporates elements of local identity, establishing the airport as a landmark public building for the region. Additionally, the substantial roof structure functions as a massive solar collector, reinforcing the vision of a sustainable airport.
